Nigerian meat pie has some fillings unlike other snacks like buns, doughnut and others that you can make straight up. The fillings are carrot, minced meat, onions, Irish potatoes.
Nigerian meat pie is flaky, moist and the flavour is very rich. If you like going to eateries to get snacks, you will notice that immediately you asked for snacks the first thing they mention is meat pie before other snacks because it is a very popular snack.
To like those that doesn’t like eating snacks before I guess you haven’t try Nigerian pie before because as soon as you taste it you won’t let go.
If you are used to baking before now, we can easily get some ingredients from our kitchen. We can also go to store to get those ingredients.
So let us talk about the ingredients we need in making tasty Nigeria meat pie.
For the fillings of Nigerian meat pie
- 300g of minced meat
- 2 potatoes ( medium size Irish potato)
- 1medium onion or spring onion
- Pepper to taste
- ½ teaspoon of thyme
- Salt to taste
- 1 egg for brushing
- ½ teaspoon of Curry
- 2 tablespoonful of vegetables oil.
- Flour mixed with water for thickener.
For the pastry/meat pie dough
- 4 cups of all purpose flour
- 200g of butter ( can also use margarine)
- ¼ cups of water
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- Half cup of milk (evaporated or skimmed milk)
How to prepare Nigerian meat pie dough
In a big bowl, Sieve your all purpose flour with baking powder to avoid lumps, add sugar and mix very well.
Add your butter or margarine and mix till it’s all comes together and form a breadcrumbs like.
In a small separate bowl, break in your two eggs and whisk, add your whisked egg into your flour and mix well with youiir clean hands till it’s well incorporated.
Add your milk and water and mix together but do not over work your dough.
Wrap your dough and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
How to make the filling
Wash your potato and rinse it, dice into small cubes, chop your onion into smaller pieces
Wash carrot as well scrape off the back and dice it into small cubes.
Light up your gas and place your saucepan on it and add 2 tablespoonful of vegetables oil, Set the gas on a medium heat and add your chopped onions and minched meat, stir till your meat change from fresh meat color to brown colour.
Add your curry, thyme, seassioning,dry pepper and a pinch of salt, stir and cover.

Leave it to boil for some minutes. After 2-3 minutes add the diced potatoes and carrots, cover again and cook till it’s soft.
After 7 minutes mix 2 tablespoon of multipurpose flour with small quantity of water in a small bowl and add it to the meat pie filling.
Stir the filling and take it off the gas, set aside to cool off.
Shaping the dough
Take your dough out of refrigerator and cut into small balls, roll it with rolling pin on a smooth floured surface.
Roll it flat but not thin, place your rolled dough on a dumplings mould, put in your meat pie filling inside brush the edges of your dough with egg and close.
Do the same process with the remaining dough till you are done moulding all the dough.
Grease baking pan with some oil, you can line it with baking sheet.
Put in the mould meat pie on the baking pan and brush the top of your meat pie dough with egg.
You can pierce the top of the meat pie dough with fork.
After you are done arranging it on the baking pan, preheat the oven oven to 15O degree and leave for 5 minutes
Place in the meat pie and bake it for 35-40 minutes.
Remove from the oven and allow to cool
Your tasty Nigerian meat pie is ready to be served.

Can meat pie be stored? Yes you can store it in your fridge for 3-5 days and you can put it inside freezer for up to 7 weeks, but make sure there is regular electricity so it doesn’t loose taste.
- If you do not have oven use your gas to bake by putting in your big pot on fire and put some small stones, preheat for 5 to 7 minutes on medium heat and bake your meat pie for 35 minutes.
- Adding of flour to the filling thickens it.
- Brushing the dough edges prevent it from opening when you’re baking it.
- Using egg yolk to brush the upper part of the dough will give it deep golden brown color.
- Egg white will give it shinny look.
